What's up, Holmies? Every day, one hat gets selected as Case of the Day. No voting. Not the hat with the most midi-chlorians. No corporate overlord is picking this. Just some Hatlock math leading to a deal score.
Here is the setup.
- Discount size. Bigger discount, bigger score. A 50 percent off hat beats a 20 percent off hat. Shocking, I know.
- Dollars saved. Percent off is not the whole story. $30 off a $60 hat scores higher than $15 off a $30 hat, even though both are half off.
- A short list. The 20 best deals that qualify make the cut, and the date picks one of them. Everybody gets the same case all day.
- No reruns. The same hat does not come back for at least a month, and a team sits out a week after its turn.
Canadian shops sit this one out, since their prices are in Canadian dollars.
Then there is deal strength, the magnifying glasses on the case file. One for every clue the deal turns up:
- 30% off or more.
- Half off or better.
- Under $30. The "I may be able to justify this" zone.
- Most-worn sizes in stock. At least three of 7 1/8 through 7 5/8. A hat in only 6 7/8 is not a deal, that is a personal challenge.
- New this week. New arrivals get their moment.
Tap the little "i" next to the magnifying glasses and the case file shows you which clues it found.
The case updates every morning. It is just my made-up algorithm doing detective work.
I thought this would be a fun feature. You can always ignore it and get straight into the other thousands of deals.
Updated October 14, 2026: the Case of the Day became a case file, and deal strength became five clues.
